Rainbow rice
As the leaves begin to turn and the cold weather looms, I’ve been trying to come up with some activities to keep waiting in the wings for when I can’t take the boys outside. (Okay, so I don’t really take them outside that much NOW, because HAI! Not keen on the constant chasing it would involve by myself! But, our outings will be even less frequent as it gets colder.)
So today, we dyed rice. This idea came from the DesignHER Momma and was SO incredibly easy. All you need is a 5-pound bag of rice, some liquid food coloring, some rubbing alcohol and paper to dry the rice on (I used some ads that had come in the mail). Pour some rice into a bowl. I did about 2 cups at a time I would say? Then, add your food coloring – about 20-25 drops. Splash in half a teaspoon of the rubbing alcohol and mix. Then spread the rice out on the paper to dry, and on to your next color until you’ve dyed the whole bag.
Once it’s all dry, put it in a plastic container and add some various pouring and scooping tools. I totally used pieces from my Tupperware stash. And there ya go: a colorful indoor sandbox without the mess of actual sand. Enjoy!

I don’t think I would – My boys have pretty filthy hands at times, plus I’m not keen on the rubbing alcohol being ingested. If you wanted to prepare colored rice to eat though, I’m sure you could do the same thing minus the alcohol and then just cook it up after it dries. I may have to try that now
This is awesome! After my girls are done playing, I always just vacuum up the stray rice pieces that fell on the floor.
